Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Temperley, Co-Founder of A Mighty Good Time, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A Mighty Good Time is a one-stop-shop for in-person, virtual, and phone-based activities for 50+ adults nationwide. Our customers are both older adults, who are searching for things to do, as well as the companies and agencies who want to reach this key population. Our site is free to search, and you can always find amazing things to do!

Tell us about yourself

I have worked with older adults for over 30 years, mostly in the non-profit sector, but I only realized about seven years ago that I had an entrepreneurial drive. I had been creating programs for my employers for years, but I wanted to dream up new ideas of my own. A Mighty Good Time is my 3rd business. I was lucky to meet my co-creators, Jen Emerick-Cayton and Ian Pederson, a couple of years ago. They have a passion, like me, to improve the lives of older adults. I am motivated each day to do this work as I know that our website changes lives by connecting older adults to classes and programs across the country that can help them stay social, active, and engaged.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

For me, my biggest accomplishment has been creating mission-based businesses that change people's lives. Of course, it's always an accomplishment when you finally are "in the black," but for me, the joy comes when you start to get feedback on how your work truly makes a difference and people begin to tell their friends.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is being able to move your way through the unknown, continuing to push forward, especially in the first couple of years as your business gets its legs. You have to be your own cheerleader and hold on to the vision that others may not see yet.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Relationships are everything. Always say yes to coffee and genuinely listen to the people you meet and see how you can help them. The goodwill and connection will come back to you.
  2. Do your discovery. Research and interview your potential customers. Your idea for a business may sound great, but that doesn't mean everyone wants it.
  3. Find yourself a team to support you. Whether that's a business partner, coach, mastermind group, or other, being an entrepreneur is lonely work, and you are going to need a sounding board.
