Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ami Hassan, owner of Falafel Place, located in Winnipeg, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Restaurant serving ethnic (Middle Eastern) food with lots of vegan/plant-based, gluten-friendly options made from scratch.

Tell us about yourself

I immigrated to Canada in 1985. I didn't have work, so I opened up the original Falafel Place with my father-in-law. It had 13 seats. We experimented with all types of foods (including vegan, vegetarian, etc.), built a very loyal clientele, and were able to move twice more to bigger locations. We pride ourselves on providing healthy, high-quality food. The social aspect of the job motivates me; I enjoy seeing the regulars first thing in the morning.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Maintaining a third generation of customers. Many couples got their start at the Falafel Place, and now they are bringing their kids to eat here. Also, I have mentored many people who have gone on to open up their own businesses/restaurants.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Maintaining the high quality on a daily basis, especially when you're not the only one making every item. Training new employees. Keeping a smile on even if the customer is not always right.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure you pick the right location.
  2. Do not compromise on the quality of ingredients.
  3. Be there as much as you can.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

It’s better to work for yourself than for somebody else. You have to love your job in order for the business to succeed.
