Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mary La Croix Schmidt, Owner of A Mary Thought Jewelry, located in Johns Creek, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
A Mary Thought Jewelry is a small home-based business designing and manufacturing one-of-a-kind jewelry. My typical customer is a woman thirty to fifty years old.
Tell us about yourself
I actually got started when I took a wire wrapping class at the Johns Creek Arts Center in Johns Creek, Georgia. I had inherited several years earlier my mother's pearls after her death. The pearls were not precious, strictly cosmetic, but other than her wedding ring, they were the only piece of jewelry my mother typically wore. The pearls were in terrible condition and desperately needed to be restrung, or wire wrapped.
Since a class was being offered at the arts center, I opted for wire wrapping. This class set me on a path to jewelry design, as I completely fell in love with this medium. Since that first class, I've taken hundreds more classes, leading me on a path to metalsmithing, which is my primary craft today. The love of jewelry design motivates me to get into my studio and create something new every day.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is probably receiving appreciative reviews from customers.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is probably waiting for that next sale.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- If possible, work for someone else first in the industry you're thinking of opening in.
- Learn and be proficient in social media.
- Keep stretching and learning your craft.
