What's your business, and who are your customers?

A la Art caters to our client's artistic vision. We work directly with homeowners, interior designers/decorators, and general contractors to create decorative finishes and custom artwork on walls, canvas, furniture, etc. We provide both residential and commercial services.

Tell us about yourself

I was artistic as a child. It wasn't until I reached my 30s that I realized I could make a career of this God-given gift. I was a manicurist for 10-plus years and would paint detailed artwork on clients' nails. Well, that led to, literally, bigger art pieces such as walls and canvas. I enjoy the smiles and excitement I bring to each and every client I work with. It really is fun being part of a big project and seeing people's visions come to life.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Other than having my work in just about every casino in Vegas, I was asked to lead a team of artists in California at Disneyland's Guardians of the Galaxy attraction. We provided decorative paint throughout the interior of the ride.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest part of being a business owner is saying no to clients. Maintaining a work schedule separate from personal. It often runs into each other, and you find yourself working 7 days a week more than 12 hours a day.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Commitment is a big part of success. Follow through and stand behind your work.
  2. Research and compare what services or products you offer. You want to be competitive but do not sell yourself short.
  3. Be patient, as very few businesses are born overnight.
