Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stephen Thomas, Owner of A Gentleman's Trove, located in Atlanta, GA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We relieve you of the headache of shopping for men by providing curated men's gifts with an emphasis on quality. Our customers are anyone looking to buy a gift for their husbands, fathers, business partners, etc.
Tell us about yourself
I am a second-generation gift whisperer. My mother once made gift baskets on the side while working full-time as a nurse. I've learned everything I know from her. While helping her, I wanted to branch out and try my own thing with A Gentleman's Trove. What motivates me each day is the satisfying feeling that I get when someone chooses us to provide a gift for someone special in their lives.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating the build-a-box in-house. It creates a fun gifting experience for the customer and gives us a better understanding of the types of things our customers want to see in a box.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
We're still a very small, family-owned business. So, each of us has to wear a lot of hats.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't be afraid to make mistakes early. Honestly, that's the best time... when fewer people can see them.
- If you have a premium product or service, charge a premium price. Customers aren't just paying for the product or service, they pay for the convenience and for your expertise as well.
- Create a customer profile of your ideal customer. Write (or type) down their pain points, interests, buying patterns, demographics, and motivations, and work on addressing those very things for that customer.
