Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mediation services but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Linda Roberts, the founder at Calgary Divorce Solutions. Linda, a certified mediator, based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A respectful, fair, cost and time-efficient way of moving through the massive transition of a marriage breakdown; separation and divorce.

Tell us about yourself

My divorce via the traditional system (the courts and lawyers) took me six long years. Learned from the courtroom trenches that there had to be a better way to navigate to a successful outcome that didn't leave couples/parents so bitter that co-parenting would also end up practiced bitterly and financially broken. I wanted to help others not to have to spend ~$114K in legal fees and stay tied up in the unknown stage of what I had to. My mandate is to remain empathetic because I've been there to ensure a less stressful process for those already in a very stressful situation.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I think every day as a business owner is an accomplishment; there's nothing easy about wearing all of the hats, all of the time.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Accepting that there will be lulls, you have to balance to shut it off at home.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Do something you're passionate about, stay positive through the tough times, and work hard at building a bit of slush before opening your doors.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being self-employed is so rewarding, but it's not for everyone, so do your homework first before jumping in with both feet.
