Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in consultancy but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Pamela Lee, Owner of 7V Consulting, located in Calgary, AL, CA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run my own consulting business. I have a wide range of customers, mainly in the not-for-profit world. I assist in developing strategic plans, coaching executives, conducting evaluations, and business development opportunities.

Tell us about yourself

I entered the business when I first took on a couple of contracts at the University of Calgary. I saw a need for my services to help businesses get established, developing all the necessary protocols to move forward with their plans, implementing them, and eventually helping them grow. I am motivated every day to make a difference.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is a lot of the work I've done with clients and watching people grow. In my role at Advocis Calgary, I got to coach the President of the Board personally. It's an interesting journey from coaching her on how to mentor and ensuring the programs we have in place kick-off and increase our membership engagement. It's watching her grow from learning to be a mentor to reminding her what to say and not say, how to pitch to CEOs and other organizations to ensure we get sponsorship dollars, to helping her financial business kick-off. We've also done some amazing initiatives there, watching our social media kick-off with increasing engagement by 1200% and developing initiatives to increase membership engagement, including milestone awards, welcome packages, and exit packages.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Telling people what you do. Some won't understand it. Some will. It's also ensuring that the people under your care will continue to be supported and that you must continue your work.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a mentor. You don't know what you don't know. By finding a mentor, they can see things you might not be able to see and allow you to strive to become better.
  2. Just do it. You'll fail. You'll want to give up. But you'll learn. The trick is to love the journey. Remember what drives you and what you are striving for.
  3. Burnout is real. Make sure you do something or have something that allows you to ground yourself or someone who keeps you real.
