Beat the Glow of Confidence - 5-6-7-8 Dance Studio

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Coughlin, Owner of 5-6-7-8 Dance Studio, located in Dracut, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm the owner and creative director of 5-6-7-8 Dance Studio. Our dancers range in age from 15 months old (our babies) to 18 years old. We offer a wide variety of recreational and competitive classes. Many of our students graduate and continue with professional dance careers, but they always come back 'home' to visit.

Tell us about yourself

Dance has been a constant part of my life for over 47 years. I have danced all over the world, including in China and Germany. Many of my friends are dancers, and my daughters are dancers, also. It's been an industry that has kept me young and kept me on my feet during difficult times, but most importantly, it has allowed me to teach and inspire our youth. There is something magical when a child accomplishes a new move and skill for the first time. Nothing beats the glow of their confidence.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'd have to say my biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be how I'm able to mentor my dancers and staff beyond studio and dance life. I take a lot of pride in creating a successful person in all aspects of life – not just success on stage.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

As a business owner, it can be challenging to balance my time between my creative endeavors and my business responsibilities.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your trade – Don't ever stop learning.
  2. Live a balanced life – Make time for yourself, as well as for your business.
  3. Lead by example - When you own a business, it's up to you to create a respectful atmosphere that encourages learning and growth.
