Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Janka Saloka, Founder of 3R Digital Consulting, located in Massachusetts, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a certified Director of Marketing who helps professional service-based businesses, mainly in the financial sector, get more eyes on their business by creating and implementing strategic marketing and content plans.
Tell us about yourself
I first joined the business world when I was 18. For over 20 years, I held various roles in corporate America and also supported all types of small business owners across different industries – legal services, real estate, construction, healthcare, and psychology. Then, I said goodbye to business for a little while to pursue my lifelong passion for cooking, only to realize during the Covid pandemic how much I actually missed the business world.
As I thought about returning in some capacity, I recognized how underserved small to medium-sized businesses are: they’re chasing their business dreams but don’t have the time or energy to dedicate to creating and implementing a full marketing plan.
I decided to leverage my experience from decades in the business world with a new certification as a Marketing Director for small and medium-sized business owners who want someone who treats their business as if it were my own. As a small business owner myself, I’m honored I get to play a small part in helping them realize their big dreams.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
One of my biggest accomplishments has been seeing my clients receive the results after implementing my strategic marketing and content plans. A recent client came to me with a little over 2% in traffic from social media to their website. After implementing the marketing and content strategy, this client’s social media grew to over 12% in 4 months. I am excited to play a continual role in my client’s success.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Mindset was one of my biggest challenges early on. It was initially overwhelming to go from an employee to a business owner mindset. I had to learn how to speak in a way business owners understood. Networking with other business owners and creating accountability groups has been a massive help in overcoming this challenge.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Networking is your friend. Instead of just making connections focused on growing your business, focus on building genuine relationships and giving value to others where possible.
- Create a balanced schedule. It’s essential to balance how much time you spend working (client work or on your own business) and taking time for yourself or your family. Most start a business to have a work-life balance. Going out on a walk during lunch or stepping away from your desk for a few minutes to enjoy the outdoors with your kids is okay.
- Outsource parts of your business as you grow. All business owners, in the beginning, wear all the hats, but it won’t be sustainable long term. As your business grows, begin with outsourcing the bookkeeping or administrative tasks. Doing so will free up your time to focus on growing your business and give you more time with your family.
