Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Shaka Watson, founder of 3lindVision Photography LLC., located in Parkville, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a wedding/portrait company that services the DMV and all surrounding areas in New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York, Delaware, Atlanta, and more. We aim to deliver an experience with our clients that’s one of a kind. As a photographer, you’re capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments; our objective is to bottle up the perfect moments and secure those images where our clients can relive them forever.

Tell us about yourself

I owe it all to my wife. Seriously she gave me the support to create a business for something that I love. Being a fan of the art first and watching other photographers and their work gives me the motivation to create magic. As a father and a husband as I receive a great deal of support from my family.. they support my dreams wholeheartedly every day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I’d have to say being published. I’ve had the opportunity to have some of my wedding photos taken by some of the largest and most recognized wedding magazines and blogs… such as Munaluchi, Black Bride, and the Coordinated Bride.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Managing time! It’s difficult to be a father, husband, and business owner simultaneously. There should be a law passed for it to be 30 hours in a day at least… lol!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be transparent with yourself and your clients. Never provide clients with anything unimaginable. Clients appreciate it when you tell them something can’t be done and why.
  2. Keep learning your craft. You can learn a new technique or a way to advance every day.
  3. Pay taxes.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being a business owner is scary and adventurous all at the same time. Most people don’t even start a business because of the possibility of failure. Taking that opportunity to fail and survive is the risk you need to take. You don’t want to look back when it’s too late, and that disappointment is eating at you. Follow your dreams.
