Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in web design but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Mamdouh Kaldas, Founder of 103Graphics, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a web creator with a lot of passion for creating modern, mobile-friendly websites. I work as a freelancer building websites for clients from all over the world. I also enjoy teaching youth about web design, freelancing, and WordPress. I have a number of courses published online on multiple platforms like Udemy, LearnFormula, Edraak, and more.

Tell us about yourself

I'm a pharmacist by education and did a career shift at one point in my life to work as a web creator. I started working as a freelancer in 2008 and since then have continued to do so. Freelancing has allowed me to keep working no matter where I live, and this has proved to be a great advantage in my life as I had to move a lot during the past 5 years. I enjoy helping people get started on the web by creating their websites and guiding them through the process to have successful ventures.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

This is one of the hardest questions I had to answer, mainly because I have to put business accomplishments in their real perspective in life as a whole. By doing that, I can't find anything worth mentioning; let me explain why I say that! I believe that staying close to my family, giving them time and love, and being there for my kids' life moments like sports tournaments or school events and life, in general, is the most valuable thing I can do in life, and I'm so proud of it. I don't think anything I've achieved in my business or will in the future gives me the same happiness and fulfillment as being there for my family. I firmly believe that nothing I achieve in business can make up for losing these moments with my family!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I guess finding new clients is one of the hardest parts, and as a freelancer having a constant stream of clients and projects at all times is one of our greatest challenges as work can become seasonal at times, and this makes it hard to adapt and keep your business running efficiently at all times. To overcome this, I try to work through multiple channels and platforms and keep long-term relationships with my clients, as this is the Goldmine of getting work and referrals.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Look for something that you love and try to make it your business; this will make it much easier for you to go to work every day and bear any difficulties that come your way.
  2. Make sure to have a healthy work/life balance; without that, no achievements will have any meaning if you don't have a life to live. Your health, family, and friends should always be a top priority, no matter what work you do and what goals you try to achieve.
  3. Enjoy the small wins, be happy with each step you take, and don't wait till you achieve something big or make X amount of money, sales, or whatever your goal is. Enjoy the life you have today, as it will never come back!
