Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with William Dew, Founder of 1 Match Marketing, located in Denham Springs, LA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Business waste LOTS of money on ineffective marketing. So many great businesses and nonprofits never really make an impact. That's why I started 1 Match Marketing. Small businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits usually don't have expendable resources to fuel their big dreams. But if you know what you're doing, you just need 1 Match to start a fire.
Tell us about yourself
After graduating high school, I wasn't sure what to do, but I wanted to make a difference. While working with a nonprofit for seven years, I saw so many people with great intentions frustrated by a lack of resources. This lack was almost always caused by ineffective communication. Years later, after working for several small businesses, I noticed a similar pattern. People had great products (or services) but had trouble consistently sharing their value.
I love telling stories and helping people who are making a difference. After years of freelancing, I started 1 Match Marketing and became a StoryBrand Certified Guide. Using the proven BrandStory framework, I help business owners create clear and compelling messages. Building off this solid foundation, we map out a practical implementation strategy to SPARK more effective marketing.
I love seeing eyes light up when we find the perfect words. I love empowering businesses and nonprofits to increase their impact. I love providing the SPARK and helping others grow.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being successful enough to do pro bono work for friends making a difference.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
There are many challenges I've faced as a business owner, but the hardest has been keeping my work/life balance. I love having a home office and being more available for my family, but that also means work is just a few steps away. When the to-do list is long, it can be difficult to draw healthy boundaries.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a very clear "Why." Take time to clarify your motivation and your goals. Make that vision visible (on your desk, wallpaper, or on your daily planner) to always remind yourself. This grows confidence and can pull you through challenges.
- Find a mentor. Someone successful (in business and life) who will encourage you, challenge you, and offer another perspective. Other's experience has saved me lots of headaches and heartaches.
- Align yourself with others to build credibility. Get certified. Establish partnerships. Be a complementary business' go-to. This helps solidify your reputation, increases confidence, and brings in business.
